Pivotal Euro 2024 Group Match Marred by Scary Incident

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Hungary forward Barnabás Varga was in hospital in stable condition Sunday after suffering a serious-looking injury in his team's final group match at the European Championship.

The second half of the pivotal Euro 2024 group match was marred by a scary injury to Varga as he challenged for a ball with Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

Varga was stretchered off the pitch and taken to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken leg and a dislocated ankle.

“It was a very difficult moment for us,” Hungary coach Marco Rossi said. “Barnabás is a very important player for us, and we are all very concerned about him.

“We are hoping for the best, and we will do everything we can to support him during his recovery.”

The injury occurred in the 65th minute of the match, with Hungary trailing Scotland 2-1.

The match was eventually abandoned due to the severity of Varga's injury, and Scotland was awarded a 3-0 victory.
